Our History

Electrical Materials Company (EMC) was incorporated in 1960 serving electricians in the greater Fort Dodge, IA area. We carry the common and uncommon items in areas including power distribution, metering, lighting, lugs, connectors, wire, cord, conduit, fittings, and wiring devices. We handle the quick counter picks all the way up to scheduled project management for large jobs. Our staff with more than 100 years combined experience can find solutions to difficult problems. When we need, we can navigate the tech support as we assist with processing warranty claims.

EMC is committed to filling material with customer service in mind. We provide back-end service for electricians and other service professionals to spend more productive time serving their end users rather than rummaging the box stores. We deliver truck orders to shops, and save time by taking lists of material—written or verbally dictated—turning them into material supplied. We use our resources and value-added services to support the service professional.

Power Distribution

Our switchgear line is Eaton’s Cutler Hammer brand; EMC’s Fort Dodge Branch is an Authorized Eaton Distributor. We carry type BR loadcenters and breakers for residential applications, type CH loadcenters and breakers for agricultural and light commercial applications, and type BAB bolt-on breakers for Cutler Hammer PRL panels for demanding applications. We special order motor control centers and variable frequency drives for solutions that work.

When severe weather strikes, we carry Milbank and Midwest meter sockets and accessories so electricians can restore power to damaged electrical services without delay. We carry aluminum utility wire for underground (USE-RHH-RHW, SEU, SER) and above ground (ACSR) applications and we maintain local stock in Fort Dodge, IA. In our wire aisle, we have an assortment of type SOOW rubber cord for temporary connections. We are a full line electrical distributor.

Lighting

For lighting needs, we carry fixtures from Cooper Lighting’s Metalux, Lumark and All Pro brands, Universal Lighting Technologies, Orbit Industries, and Eiko Lighting. We have access to Pac Lighting, Hubbell Lighting, and Louvers International on a special order basis. From the 2×4 troffers and flat panels all the way up to the high lumen output sports lighters, we assist with calculating how many foot-candles of light are needed for the application by working closely with our vendors to create layouts and obtain job quotes accordingly. We have highbays, lowbays, wall packs and outdoor floodlights with trunnion or slip fitter mounting options. We have light bulbs. Our main lightbulb line is Westinghouse Lighting for enclosure rated LED corncob lamps, LED tubes for retrofitting old fluorescent fixtures, and legacy fluorescent tubes and metal halide bulbs. We carry legacy ballasts from Universal Lighting Technologies as well as their innovative and labor saving LED retrofit panels. If it is a difficult to source legacy lamp, we have various sources to find and special order those lamps. For all things lighting EMC has as a complete offering.

Connections

For the connections that matter, the right lugs and connectors are important. We carry Penn Union lugs and connectors for aluminum and copper conductors: small and large terminals, splicing & termination, crimping connectors, mechanical connectors, insulated mechanical connectors, grounding connectors, and split-bolt connectors. We carry wire nuts and electrical tape from various suppliers. For the specified connections, we can order NSi and Burndy: especially in emergency, next day air cases to get to get the plant up and running again or pass an important inspection.

We carry Encore Wire and General Cable. We are migrating our large gauge THHN copper wire to the superior XHHW insulation. In Iowa’s extreme climate of highs and lows, XHHW will give the electrician more installation flexibility and a better finished product. It is the difference between rubber and plastic. As always, we keep an eye on the current markets and stay up to date with our pricing so we will be among the first to lower our prices with our locally maintained inventory. We have type nm-b building wire for residential installations and small gauge THHN and TFFN. We use our inventory to source large material bids including tray cable and specialty wires where the applications demand them.

Protection

Aluminum Rigid Conduit for grain elevator applications where non-ferrous conduit with the protection of metal is desirable, we well serve the agricultural market with our full line of stocked conduit. We carry PVC schedule 40 and schedule 80 in the common sizes. We even stock 3/4” and 1” rigid stainless steel conduit. For hanging and securing pipe, we have galvanized strut with options for how holes are configured. We cannot forget EMT, IMC and Rigid and rigid steel conduit. We can replenish our stock very quickly from our primary pipe suppliers United Pipe and Steel and Allied Tube and Steel.

We stock the fittings too. Orbit Industries supplies a nice malleable liquid tight fitting as well as steel boxes, welded or drawn. For the reasonably priced EMT fittings, we have Halex for couplings, connectors, bushings, reducing washers, beam clamps and more. We have Hubbell Killark and Emerson Appleton for specified heavy fittings, but can fill in with Topaz. Our PVC fittings and boxes are from industry leader Cantex. Our labor saving, trusted bx and ac fittings are from Arlington. We are careful with our mix to maintain the balance between quality, availability and affordability.

From Leviton, we have the wiring devices and switch plates covered. Be it GFCI receptacles in Ivory, White, Light Almond, Brown, and Black, we have it. We carry a full line of common Leviton switch plates duel gang, combination light switch and receptacle, the contractor orders and our warehouse picks to save on time for that random service call where driving across town counts against billable time. Be it commercial, residential, or light industrial, EMC carries the Leviton wiring devices that contractors need.
